It’s a real tragedy that flu season coincides with holiday season. While it’s not impossible to still have a holly, jolly time, it certainly puts a damper on the festivities. And when you’re spending time with friends and family, you don’t want to feel like crap or share your germs.
So what can you do to prevent an untimely cold?
If you choose to get flu shot and that works for you – then great! But I’m focusing on measures you can take outside of that. This is my anti-flu, cold-combative arsenal. Everyone’s immune system is different, but if you have these items on hand, you’ll have the best chance possible of staying healthy!
- Wellness Formula by Source Naturals
These supplements are packed with 30 immunity boosting ingredients, designed to jump start your immune system and make sure it’s ready to do battle. While it’s recommended that you take these at the first sign of a cold (i.e. sore throat, stuffy nose), I use them a bit differently. If I am around anyone who I know to be sick, or I will be in a situation where my immune system will be working in overdrive, I will take these as a preventative measure. This is my absolute best defense against catching something while traveling! I take these 1-2 days before I’ll be flying to really get my system built up before the trip.I use the capsule form, but they are also available as tablets. You can find them at Whole Foods, Sprouts, or other natural retailers. Also available on Amazon!
- Airborne Chewables
The more well known immunity booster! I take these in combination with the supplement recommended above for an extra layer of defense. These are mostly just vitamin C, and some claim they are more of a placebo, but it can’t hurt! I would recommend the chewable tablets or gummies.
- Germ-X Antibacterial Wipes (alcohol-free)
Throw some of these wipes in your car to clean your hands after being out. Even if you didn’t come in contact with someone who is sick, you likely touched a shopping cart, gas pump, door, etc. that had bacteria on it.
- Traditional Medicinals Tea
If you’ve never tried these teas – you are missing out! This brand uses organic ingredients and the products are reasonably priced ($3.99-$5.49). I like to buy their Seasonal Sampler in the colder months to have a variety of options on hand. It comes with their most popular immunity teas – Throat Coat, Breathe Easy, Gypsy Cold, and Echinacea Plus. I drink the Echinacea tea as a preventative, and if I do happen to get sick, I use the other three depending on my symptoms. The sampler is also a great way to figure out which tea you like best!

- Nasopure Nasal Wash Kit
If you have issues with your sinuses, this little device can work wonders. When you feel pressure building up in your face and nose, try using this nasal wash! I typically don’t suffer from bad sinus pain, but my husband does, and he swears by this thing. You can get a starter kit with an 8 ounce nasal wash bottle and 20 buffered salt packets. You will need to also purchase distilled water (DO NOT use tap water!) to mix with the salt packets.
I highly recommend stocking up on these items before the flu season hits hard. And of course, be sure you are hyper aware of yourself and others. This may sound over the top, but if I’m in the store and someone sneezes or coughs, I will walk the opposite way. Open doors using your foot, elbow, or back of your hand. After you go out, avoid touching your face or eating before properly washing your hands. And if you are sick, do the right thing by staying home and not infecting others.
