Pela

IMG_0348Fabulous Flaxstic Phone Cases

Gives back to: Member of “1% for the Planet,” Donates to a selection of charities including Amnesty International, World Wildlife Fund, Unicef, International Committee of the Red Cross, Free the Slaves, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Save the Waves Coalition, Oceana, Surfrider Foundation
Headquarters: Ontario, Canada
Price: $39 (coupons available on site)
Where to buy: pelacase.com

Why I love them:
If you own a cell phone, chances are you have a case on it (if you don’t, what kind of risky business are you into?!). I have some friends that like to have multiple cases, swapping them out depending on the occasion/outfit/mood. I prefer to stick to one case, but I do like to do my research and choose an attractive, durable case each time I upgrade my phone.

When I bought my iPhone X last year, I did my usual internet search for a cute protective case. Rather than my usual go-to brand, I opted for a new company I stumbled upon: Pela. I’ve looked into eco-friendly phone covers before, but none had ever given me enough pause to make the switch…until now.

The Pelacase comes in a wide variety of colors, all featuring a unique flecked texture derived from the flax shive used to craft the case and give it strength and shock absorbency. Unlike other “eco-friendly” phone cases, Pela is completely plastic free and biodegradable, yet fits my iPhone like a glove and is as protective, if not more, than any other case I’ve used.

On top of that, Pela does collaborations with various environment-saving organizations, such as Save the Waves Coalition, Surfrider Foundation, and Oceana.

iPhone and Samsung cases available here.

Ethique Beauty

Bottleless Personal Care Products

Gives back to: HUHA (Helping you Help Animals), World Animal Protection, International Animal Rescue, The Orangutan Project
Headquarters: New Zealand
Price: $8.50-$32
Where to buy: Amazon

Why I love them:

Nearly all beauty and self-care products are packaged in some sort of plastic bottle, which we discard when empty. According to Ethique, we throw out 80 billion plastic shampoo and conditioner bottles alone (globally, every year). It’s why many companies are seeking alternative ways to package their products, but I think Ethique is doing it best.

They offer a wide range of bottleless products, not just shampoo and conditioner. You can pretty much “unbottle” your entire bathroom cabinet, with items including: deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, face and body scrubs, face cleansers, and face and body moisturizers. They also have a few unique items that you wouldn’t think to find an eco-friendly alternative to: stain remover, pet shampoo, and self-tanner. All of their products are made from non-chemical ingredients that are ethically sourced, naturally-derived and sustainable.

So #giveupthebottle and get started with one of their fun starter kits or other products, all sold through Amazon, and available with Prime!

Rothy’s

rothysComfortable, Cute, Recycled Flats

Gives back to: Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, 5 Gyres, The Ocean Cleanup
Headquarters: San Francisco, CA
Price: $125-165 ($20 coupon for first time purchasers)
Where to buy: rothys.com

Why I love them:

About 2 years ago, I went on a hunt to find the most comfortable flats on the market. I was tired of getting blisters in the first 5 minutes from all of my cute shoes. At the time, I was traveling quite a bit for work, and I was always miserable because my heels were ripped open and raw. So I thought, enough is enough!

After I felt like I had searched the entire internet, I finally came across this unknown brand – Rothy’s. They quite literally claimed to be “The world’s most comfortable flat” in their google ad, so I thought I would put them to the test.

These shoes are on the “splurge” side of the spending spectrum, but they deliver. Two years into my obsession and I now own 9 pairs of Rothy’s, and have gotten a total of zero blisters. Keep in mind what I said earlier – I used to get blisters within 5 minutes of wearing shoes, so this is kind of a huge deal for me.

So not only did Rothy’s present a solution – “most comfortable flat” – they are also the coolest shoes I have ever owned, and here’s why:

  • Pointed flats are a rare find, and they do them well. I’m obsessed with the color and pattern variations.
  • The shoes are 3D knit, giving them a unique look unlike any other shoe on the market.
  • They are machine washable.
  • They are made from recycled water bottles, recycled foam, vegan and non-Toxic Adhesives, and carbon-free rubber.

Do yourself a favor and order a pair, they probably won’t be your last. Plus, you can get $20 off your first Rothy’s, available in rounded flats, pointed flats, or loafer styles.

Final Straw

The take-with-you-anywhere reusable straw

Price: $30 retail (pre-order deals available)
Where to buy: finalstraw.com

Why I love them:

If you haven’t noticed yet, straws are the new environmental evil. Plastic from product packaging, grocery bags, bottles, and even contact lenses fill up our landfills and often wind up polluting our oceans. While it is important to make the conscious decision to reduce the amount of non-recyclable items we use, it can be difficult. But it’s important to focus on the small wins, and that is why I love the concept of Final Straw.

Thinking about the times you dine out, or pick up a coffee, soda, or tea, how many times do you use a straw to consume your beverage? If you’re like me, it’s every time. I don’t like ice hitting my teeth, I don’t like drinking from the same place on the cup that someone has potentially touched, and I want to prevent dark beverages from staining my teeth.

According to Final Straw, Americans use enough straws to wrap around the Earth 2.5 times every day. That’s why they’ve created a reusable straw that can be easily attached to your keyring, or just thrown in your bag. The straw is dishwasher safe, useable with hot and cold beverages, BPA-free, and comes with a cleaning squeegee to make sure the inside of the straw is always clean.

Available for pre-order now.
